Mayor Tom and his Executive have secured cross party support from Borough Councillors to scrap the failed Local Plan 2040 and begin work immediately on a brand-new Local Plan that reflects the Borough’s real future needs.
The decision means Bedford Borough can finally move forward with a fresh approach that reflects today’s realities – including the opportunities brought by the Universal Studios development – and ensures growth is matched with the infrastructure needed to support it.
The vote ensures time and resources are now focused on shaping a stronger, future-proof Local Plan rather than propping up a failed one.
Mayor for Bedford Borough, Tom Wootton commented,
“This is the right decision for Bedford.
We are starting afresh with a plan that can actually deliver for residents.
Residents can be confident that the Conservatives will deliver a credible Local Plan - one that secures infrastructure, plans for growth, and protects our towns and villages for generations to come.”
Conservative Group Leader, Councillor Graeme Coombes commented,
“The Inspector made it clear the old plan could not continue, it is no longer relevant due to the game changer that is Universal and the potential new Town at Tempsford.
By scrapping it now, we save money and focus resources on building a proper plan that reflects Bedford’s real opportunities and challenges.”
Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth, Planning & Prosperity, Councillor Andrea Spice commented,
“It’s fantastic that Full Council has agreed we can now move on from the previously proposed Local Plan and start work on a new one.
Bedford is changing direction, and this is our chance to embrace that change and use it to shape a plan that supports new jobs, homes, and investment while protecting what makes our Borough special.
This is an exciting moment to look ahead with confidence and make the most of the opportunities that lie ahead for Bedford’s future.”
