Kempston Central & East Cllr Anthony Boutall has urged Bedford Borough Council to explore every possible option to end the ‘unbearable’ traffic congestion on Ampthill Road, Elstow Road and Cow Bridge.
Borough Council officers have said recently that no obvious solution could be pursued to end the misery for motorists. At the Borough Council’s meeting last week, Cllr Boutall pressed the Deputy Mayor on whether he agreed with this stance and emphasised the hugely damaging effect on the town arising from its creaking highways infrastructure.
Following the meeting the Times & Citizen reported that traffic congestion issues in Bedford are driving shoppers to Milton Keynes in their droves. The situation could get even worse with a planning application set to be considered for a new Aldi store situated on Ampthill Road.
Cllr Boutall said:
‘The traffic congestion around Ampthill Road, Cow Bridge, and Elstow Road is unbearable and in desperate need of improvement. Kempston residents and others from further afield are suffering from lack of action and this problem will only be further compounded by the introduction of another supermarket with no major changes.
‘I was grateful to hear from the Deputy Mayor that officers are continuously looking at options and that action has been taken where possible, but I look forward to hearing and seeing more meaningful solutions as soon as possible. This problem is as bad as I can ever remember and needs action now. I will continue to press for a resolution in the coming months.’
