Cllr and Speaker of the Council, John Wheeler

Cllr John Wheeler was elected as the Councillor for Wootton Ward at the May 2015 Borough Council election. He later was re-selected as the Councillor for Wootton in 2023 alongside Kemptson Rural. On the 15th May 2024, John was appointed as Speaker for Bedford Borough Council. 

John is heavily involved with community life and in the village as a parish councillor with over 15 years experience. He is a Governor of both Wootton Lower School and Wootton Upper School, a member of 3 village charities and a regular visitor to the village's churches. 

On the Borough Council, John is a member of St John’s Hospital Trust and is currently the vice chair of the Joint Consultative and Negotiating Committee for Primary and Secondary Education. He is also a member of the Council's Adult Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee, Children's Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee, Joint Consultative and Negotiating Committee for Primary and Secondary Education, Joint Meeting of the Children's Services and Health Overview and Scrutiny Committees, Standards Committee, Standards Complaints Sub-Committee.

Outside of the Council, John worked in advertising sales and marketing in Bedford, London, Europe and the USA.  He has a keen interest in sport, having played rugby for Bedford Athletic RUFC for 20 years and helped run the Bedfordshire Junior Lawn Tennis Association.  He is very keen on motor racing, especially Formula 1.
