Councillor John Wheeler has been appointed Speaker of Bedford Borough Council.
John was first elected as a Councillor in 2015, bringing over 20 years of experience as a parish councillor with a deep understanding of community/village life. Where, he quickly cemented himself as a powerful advocate for residents of Wootton and now Kempston Rural – ensuring they have a voice in the Council.
John has also been passionate about supporting children and young people and, since becoming a Borough Councillor, he has been a highly valued member of the Fostering Panel, Corporate Parenting Advisory Panel. He also continues to be heavily involved with a number of local charities such as the St John’s Hospital Trust.
He has been appointed as Speaker of the Council after being voted in at the Annual General Full Council meeting, Wednesday 15th May 2024 and will add to his charity work as Speaker by advocating for the Mayor’s and Speakers charities, East Anglian Air Ambulance, John Bunyan Museum and Creating Memories.
Conservative Group Leader and Portfolio Holder for Finance & Corporate, Councillor Graeme Coombes added,
“John brings a wealth of experience and dedication to public service having served his residents diligently for many years.
I am confident he will make an effective speaker for the Council, facilitating dialogue, and fostering collaboration among our fellow councillors for the betterment of the Bedford Borough community.”
