Bedford Borough Council has started works to install ‘grass-crete’ on Risborough Road’s grass verges to stop them being churned up by vehicles.
The scheme is being funded in part via a £5000 contribution from the Council Ward Funds of Newham Cllr John Mingay and former Cllr Kristy Adams. This sum is being match funded by the Council.
‘Grass-crete’ is a concrete mesh designed to protect grass but allow it to grow through the gaps.
After works began, Cllr Mingay told the Bedfordshire on Sunday:
‘The problem is the road is so narrow, people do not want to park on the grass verges but there is nowhere else to go.
‘The verges are being very heavily reinforced; the material is very thick. I always said, if we were going to do it, we must do it properly. It will cost more but will last longer.’
